3 comments:

  1. Offense
Signal-Caller: Thomas O'Brien (6-2, 205) took over the duties under center midway through last season and posted a 4-2 record as a starter while throwing for 1,148 yards and tossing 11 TDs. This season, the sophomore has completed 54 percent of his pass attempts (47-of-87) for 470 yards and one score, but O'Brien has been erratic as he's also thrown five interceptions in two games. He has not attempted a rush this season.

On the Ground: Everything about the Jackrabbits' offense starts with senior Kyle Minett. The 5-10, 215-pounder is on the preseason watch list for the Walter Payton Award, given to the best offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Minett has produced 152 yards through two games this season and his 32 carries are 74.4 percent of the team total (43). RB Tyler Duffy (5-10, 210), WR Tyrel Kool and QB Thomas O'Brien have combined for a total of two yards on 11 carries this season. With 120 yards last week against Illinois State, Minett now ranks fourth on the SDSU career rushing chart with 3,221 yards.

Playing Catch: WR Tyrel Kool (5-10, 185) has been QB Thomas O'Brien's favorite target. Kool has a team-leading 12 catches and 142 receiving yards while eight players overall have caught multiple passes. WR Aaron Rollin (6-1, 215), also a sophomore like Kool and O'Brien, is second on the squad with eight catches for 88 yards and WR Brandon Hubert (5-11, 190), a redshirt freshman from Gretna, is tied with RB Kyle Minett for third on the squad with seven catches apiece.

Kicking It Around: PK Kyle Harris (6-0, 190) has struggled early in the season, hitting just 1-of-5 field-goal attempts. Harris nailed a 20-yarder in the opener, but has missed from 34, 35, 44 and 51 over the past two weeks. He has not attempted a PAT this fall, as the team has gone for a two-point conversion on both TD drives (converted one).

Return Game: Cole Brodie (5-10, 190) leads the Jackrabbit return game as he has seven kickoff returns for 145 yards (20.7 ypr), including a long of 41 yards. Dominique Clare (5-11, 215) also has taken back three kickoffs for 18.7 ypr. Cole is the only Jackrabbit with a punt return this fall, returning six punts for 8.8 ypr.

***SDSU opened the season ranked in the top 10 (No. 9 by the media and No. 10 by the coaches) in the FCS before dropping its first two games by a combined 50-17 margin.
***The Jackrabbits did not get an offensive touchdown until more than 105 minutes into the season when Tyler Duffy scored on a 3-yard run with 14:51 left to play in second game of the year.
***RB Kyle Minett's 120 yards on 18 carries last week marked his 15th career 100-yard rushing effort. He has rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons.
***Eight of the 12 players listed on the SDSU offensive line depth chart are either redshirt freshmen or sophomores. Overall, 16 players on the offensive side of the depth chart are sophomores, redshirt freshmen or true freshmen.

  2. Defense
Up Front: DT Brian Fischer (6-3, 255) leads the SDSU defense up front and ranks third on the squad with 14 tackles, including one sack. Fischer is one of two new starters on the D-line along with DE Zacharia Bowers (6-0, 235). NT Ross Basham (6-1, 275) and DE Jake Steffen (6-3, 240) returned after starting 12 and seven games, respectively, last season. The pair has combined for 13 total tackles along with two PBUs and a blocked kick in 2010.

The Middle Men: A preseason FCS second-team All-American, LB Derek Domino (6-3, 225) is one of six returning starters on defense and the team’s top returning tackler after posting 100 tackles and team-high-tying five interceptions in 2009. This year, Domino is second on the squad with 21 tackles including a PBU. Also plugged in at the top of the linebacking depth chart are Dirk Kool (6-2, 230) and Mike Lien (6-0, 215).

In the Back: The Jackrabbits’ defensive strength coming into the season was their secondary with four starters projected to return. S Conrad Kjerstad (5-11, 195) was set to lead the group after posting 81 tackles and five interceptions last year, but he announced during the week of Sept. 13 that he has opted to not play football anymore because of a degenerative spinal condition. With Kjerstad-who had 14 career interceptions-now on the sideline, the group is led by S Anthony Wise (6-1, 195) and CB Cole Brodie (5-10, 190), who have combined for 33 tackles and two PBUs this year. Also listed in the starting back four are S Corey Jeske (6-0, 200) and CB Rodkem Matthews (5-10, 190).

  3. With sdsu defense so bad and our quick scoring, we may set a record on points unless Bo backs off in the 3rd qty
